Music Sensation Baiyu Dishes on Beauty, Fashion and Working with Nelly!

Thursday, August 30, 2012

Baiyu 1Wow!  I must say I am absolutely blown away by Baiyu!  This up and coming music sensation is one of the contestants on CW’s The Next, executive produced by Queen Latifah and featuring Joe Jonas, Nelly, Gloria Estefan and John Rich as musical mentors to up-and-coming musicians.  Led by a powerful voice, genuine grace, and determined disposition, it’s clear Baiyu realizes her musical purpose and almost seems predestined for stardom.  And while she may also be blessed with undeniable beauty, as you can see in our interview below, she takes it in stride, making her all the more likeable.  That being said, keep reading dolls, and be sure to check Baiyu out TONIGHT on The Next, which airs each Thursday at 9/8c!

What are your a.m. and p.m. beauty routine basics?  On a day to day, I actually have a very bare bones beauty routine. It usually takes me only about five minutes in the morning to do my makeup. I seldom use foundation, but I do use concealer under my eyes and on blemishes to give things a cleaner base. I focus most of my attention on my eyes since I feel like that’s one thing I can play up the most. I love a dramatic eye, but to make it not too overwhelming, I’ll do a more shimmery shadow with a cat eye. At night, I might do a little bit of touching up, but I usually don’t shake up my beauty routine much mid-day. I always try to remember to remove my makeup, however, since it’s so important to allow your skin to breathe while you’re taking in your z’s!

You always look so impeccable.  What are your keys for a flawless face?  Thank you so much! I do think there actually is something to the philosophy of keeping things simple. I was blessed with pretty good skin, but what I’ve heard from a lot of other folks with great looking skin is that they don’t really do much in terms of lotions and potions. I literally would just wash my face with water and a face towel morning and night, and when my skin starts to feel a bit dry, I apply some light drug store moisturizer. That’s it!

Aaaannnd…we’re now all officially jealous!  What are a few of your favorite types of makeup and/or “lotions and potions?”  The one product I can’t live without is my liquid liner, but I also love beauty products that are multi-purpose. For instance, I use Josie Maran’s Argan Oil on my hair, on my face, and on drier patches of skin, to the point where I might as well be drinking that stuff with my coffee in the mornings. I also love Smith’s Rosebud Salve because not only does it keep my lips nice and plump, it also smells amazing and can be used on the fly as moisturizer.

Scenario: you’re roaming Target for any number of non-beauty related items but get sidetracked by the beauty aisles.  What first grabs your attention?  Eyelashes are the first thing that grab my attention. As a Chinese American, I was born with almost nonexistent lashes so I’ve become a bit obsessed with the range of false lashes that are on the market. I love playing around with everything from natural looking lashes to sets that are ultra-dramatic. I just think they’re so much fun and they really add that extra “oomph” to my look.

Your rock both a bold and a neutral beachy lip well.  Baiyu 2Do you prefer one or the other?  Just like my lashes, I like to switch it up with my lip color as well! I think it’s fun to be able to play up your look depending on your outfit and your mood!  There’s something ultra-sexy about a bold lip, but at the same time I can’t get over how effortlessly flawless and sensual a beachy lip looks. I kind of love both!

Switching to fashion, describe your everyday style?  My everyday style is akin to if you threw Rihanna, Lady Gaga, an 80’s hipster, and a high school geek in the blender. I’m not sure what I would call that smoothie but it works for me!

Love that answer!  Thinking about your stage-style versus your street-style, any similarities?  There are some similarities, but I do have a slightly different vibe on stage than I do off stage. It’s so funny because I could be extremely tired and overworked but as soon as I’m under the spotlight, all of that melts away and I’m just on… 110%. My stage style depends on the venue, the crowd and the set list but it tends to be a bit more edgy, out there and dramatic, whereas my street style is a little more classic and hipster, but there are days when I switch it up.

What accessories do you gravitate towards for playing up your look?  I’m a huge fan of chunky accessories. I used to only rock silver jewelry, but recently, I’ve been a huge fan of chunky, gold toned accessories, especially those accented with diamonds or synthetic equivalent. I think it goes really well with a more tanned skin tone and it also just makes things pop. I love how certain accessories can make or break an outfit, and I’m not afraid to make a statement with my choice pieces.

Baiyu 3Any nerves when working with Nelly?  What was it like having him as your mentor on The Next?  Honestly, it didn’t even really hit me what actually went down until days after the shoot. It’s so funny how things like this work because a huge mega celebrity like Nelly is someone that you see so frequently in the press and in the media that you almost feel a sense of familiarity with him before you even meet him. He was extremely down to earth and really cordial, and not to mention Nelly really seemed to care about who I was as an artist and genuinely tried to bring the best out of me. It was incredible having had the chance to work with him.

What advice would you give your 15-year-old self?  I would tell myself to not care about what anyone else thinks or says about you. I would tell myself that it’s okay to get my heart broken, that it’s okay to love hard, and that it’s okay to live life to the fullest because at the end of the day, if everything that I do is out of love and the things that I am truly passionate about, that’s the only way I am able to live without regrets.

Eva LaRueReady or not, here comes fall!  And while we might be sad to say goodbye to summer soirees, maxi dresses and our gladiator sandals, autumn has some fashion must-haves of its own.  Below, Eva LaRue, star of CSI: Miami dishes about her fall fashion and beauty favorites.

Can’t Keep your Hands off You Skin Courtesy of 3LAB

If you’re looking for the perfect skincare regiment to effectively take care of all your skin woes, look no further than 3LAB’s Ginseng Skin Care Collection.  Created to relieve stressed, dull skin by balancing and restoring luster the line also reverses and prevents signs of ages.  Each of the three products is infused with unique ingredients including:

  • Wild Mountain Ginseng: the “all healing” root, this contain many phytonutrients that can stimulate and activate the skin’s metabolism and blood flow.  This in turn regenerates, brightens and tones.
  • Natural Solution: 3LAB’s proprietary blend of seven efficacious fermented ingredients processed into a microscopic size molecule to guarantee penetration and detoxify the skin.
  • Yin Yang Extract: five herbal ingredients including Solomon’s Seal, Chinese Peony, Lotus, Lily and Foxglove, which work together to heal and is sued for keeping the properties of the body balanced and in harmony.  It improves skin tone, dryness, firmness, dullness and texture.
  • Salifporine8: a unique and rare plant that hydrates the skin by up to 6,000%!
  • Phytofis: a rare plant known for its anti-wrinkle and intense hydrating properties.
  • Licorice P-TH: Licorice plant extract which brightens and has antioxidant properties.  Additionally, it has UV absorbing action.

Ginseng LineHow to Use:

Slather on The Serum ($120) to a clean face which will both moisturize and prevent future dryness.  Follow with The Cream ($140) which locks in moisture giving you a healthy and youthful appearance.  Don’t forget The Eye Cream ($100)!  This lux cream moisturizes the under eye area and reduces the presence of under eye bags and sagging skin.

The Review:

I L-O-V-E love it!!!  Lots of skincare products talk about the balance of your skin, which, to be honest, I never really understood.  I mean, I can understand dry or greasy.  And yes, sometimes my skin is somewhere in the middle.  But “the middle'” is not necessarily balanced.  After using the Ginseng Skin Care Collection I get it now.  It’s not just “not dry” or “not greasy”.  It’s hydrated to perfection.  And literally my skin feels so silky smooth I can hardly keep my hands off me!  Is it expensive?  Yes.  But I would choose to look at it more like an investment for your face.  The quantities are so much larger than you typically receive that trust me, it will last for ages.  Check it out at 3LAB.com…your skin will thank you!

True Love! Why I’m Smitten with COLORFLO® Foundation!

Friday, August 24, 2012

COLORFLODoes anyone else always get a little more than confused when trying to find the perfect foundation?  Each of them claim to be some type of miracle worker, but in reality, they cake, melt, smudge, etc.

I was happy to recently have the opportunity to put Susan Posnick Cosmetics COLORFLO® mineral foundation to the test.  One of the most intriguing claims was that it was “sweat proof” and “water resistant.”  As you may or may not know, I also serve as the coach to Division I College cheer and dance teams.  With classes back and practices started (in a hot non-air conditioned gym), conditioning is also taking place, which, I also participate in.  Long story to get me to my point: I typically sweat through my make up like no other during this time.

Which leads me to another point, if it truly is sweat proof and water resistant, what will it feel like on?  Plastic?

When I first tried it, no joke here, it was so unnaturally natural it took me a minute to even realize I was applying it.  No streaks.  No obvious here-is-where-I-applied-foundation-lines, just natural coverage, buildable to your taste.

Back to being sweat proof and water resistant.  After my first practice, which included a 30 minute run, all I can say is wow!  I was sweaty and gross but my makeup was still pretty much flawless.  Which leads me to believe if I’m just out and about on a 90 degree day, my foundation will look like it’s a perfect 75, with no humidity and a light breeze (did we get any of those days this summer???)!

What else should you know?  COLORFLO® provides natural sun protection, does not clog pores, is enriched with vitamins A and E, is anti-bacterial, and contains no powder/talc.

The self-dispensing refillable brush foundation retails for $64 and $32 for a refill.

I give this a MUST-TRY thumbs up….and a few true love hearts!

Vena Cava Party Presented by GenArt

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

GenArt, the arts and entertainment organization dedicated to supporting emerging designers, chose to honor famed fashion alum Vena Cava last week at Chateau Marmont celebrating the launch of their Fall Collection at Barney’s New York.  The exclusive event had poolside performances by St. Vincent in addition to DJ Tennessee Thomas.

The soiree drew friends and fans of Vena Cava such as Malin Akerman, Sophia Bush, Busy Philips, Bella Heathcote, Teresa Palmer and Kelly Oxford.

Vena Cava, and other notable designers, such as Rodarte, Rebecca Taylor and Phillip Lim have all particpated in GenArt’s Fresh Faces in Fashion program, giving emerging talent the opportunity to participate in a runway fashion show.

“GenArt has always been about helping emerging artists take their careers to the next level,” said Marc Lotenberg, CEO of GenArt.  “This year we want to make an effort to connect with those artists and maintain a long-term relationship to ensure continued growth. This event for Vena Cava will be the first of many in which GenArt demonstrates support for, and celebrates the success of our alumni. We look forward to continuously working with these artists and brands interested in aligning with them to build an innovative portfolio of events, activations and digital presence.”

The Fall/Winter 2012 collection of Vena Cava, helmed by Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai, was influenced by Noir films of the 40’s as well as movies from the 70’s, like Chinatown, Taxi Driver and The Long Goodbye Goodnight

Pucker Up! We Just Found your New Red for Autumn!

Monday, August 20, 2012

Susan Posnick LondonThe Olympics might be over, but you can still pay homage to the summer games with what will soon become your new fave lip-color – London, from Susan Posnick Cosmetics ($19).  Part of the ColorEssential line, each shade, almost magically, is made to complement every skin tone.  And with a red pucker once again all the rage for fall, you’ll adore this bronzed berry classic shade.

The color seems like it could be a little harsh, no?  So I had my doubts when I tried it, even though I was hoping I had found a go-to.  Instead of smudging it across my lips when I was getting ready to be social, I tried it at the end of a long day, after I’d put on my lounge clothes and was about to indulge in a backlog of Real Housewives.  Needless to say, I was so happy with the hue, when I left the house the next morning, London was splashed on my lips like nobody’s business!

All ColorEssential shades are with formulated olive-oil, so they’re non-drying, yet also, long-lasting and they don’t bleed or feather.

Stay pretty dolls!

Love your Curls with Twisted Sista’s Curl Activator (and Win some for Yourself)!

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

Curl ActivatorThere’s no time like the present to embrace your curls and waves and run with them!  I’m actually not complaining about my hair – I’m one of those annoying women who actually loves it.  I’ve even learned to adjust to or, at least, camouflage my flaws – which most notably include stick straight hair on my sides and crazy wavy (borderline curly) hair in the back.  I swear, it’s like some kind of weird phenomenon.  Each morning I decide what direction I’m going to go with it to even it all out – straight or wavy or the occasional completely curly.

For my wavy/curly days, I’ve become infatuated with Twisted Sista’s Curl Activator.  Created to deliver volume, bounce and definition to naturally curly, afro or permed hair, or for anyone needing a curling iron to add some waves, you’ll find it keeps those in line too.  Curl Activator lends the perfect texture to everything from beachy waves to actual real, defined curls, and like all Twisted Sista products, the scent is beyond fab.

Formulated with Argan Oil, Green Tea Extract and Lychee Extract it’s both paraben and sulfate free.  It also contains Lanolin to protect, Apricot Kernal Oil to moisturize and Benzophenone to protect.  Curl Activator retails for $4.49 and is available at the places you already shop: Wal-Greens, Target and Wal-Mart among others.

However, two lucky 24-7 Style readers can win Curl Activator for themselves by commenting on this post telling us what their #1 hair problem is.  Frizz, texture, damage?  Two winners will be chosen at random each received a bottle of Curl Activator!  U.S. residents only.  Entries must be received by August 28th!

The #1 Beauty Move to Make this Fall!

Thursday, August 9, 2012

I hate to say this dolls, but summer, sadly, is coming to a close.  With all of the spare time you’ll soon find yourself with (after all, you won’t be strolling in the sand any longer), Dr. Gary L. Marder, founder of Marder Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center in Port St. Lucie, Florida, reminds us this is the perfect time for a full-body skin check.

Did you know skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S. with more than 3.5 million people diagnosed each year.  Egads, that’s nearly the entire city of L.A.!  Additionally, 20% (or 1 in 5) Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.

So what can you expect during a skin check?  Your dermatologist will look for suspicious moles, bumps and spots analyzing any worrisome changes in your skin to detect skin cancer as early as possible.

No one is unsusceptible to skin cancer so help yourself out and routinely using Dr. Marder’s ABCDE’s of Melanoma:

Asymmetry
Border
Color
Diameter
Evolution

If your mole bleeds, changes shape, size or color get yourself to your dermie ASAP because as Dr. Marder states, as long as it’s caught early, “Skin cancer is curable!”

Get Your Faux-Glow On!

If you keep up with the 24-7 Style blog, you know I’m a huge self-tanner…either through sprays or creams, foams or any of the other huge array of self-tanners out there.  Surprisingly, one thing I haven’t tried – self-tanning pads, so I, of course, jumped at the chance to give JUVA’s Self Tanning Pads ($30 for a set of 15) a whirl.  Dr. Bruce Katz, Board Certified Dermatologist and Director of the JUVA Skin & Laser Center in New York, developed the pads himself with a goal of achieving the ultimate faux glow.

What’s great about these self-tanners, your skin is left beautifully bronzed, no streaks, no unnatural qualities of orange hues, and the tan only takes a couple of hours to develop.  Plus, it’s odorless, non-comedogenic, non-oily, gentle, and free of parabens, sulfates, GMO’s, synthetic dyes & phthalates.

What you’ll love: the color!  It truly is a natural brown bronze that leaves you with a kissed-by-summer-sun glow.  Also it dries so quick – not sticky or greasy at all!!!

What you’ll wish for: bigger pads.  One is perfect for face, neck and then-some, but hey, we’re lazy…although unrealistic, it would be nice for a towel size towelette for our entire body!

If you’ve been disappointed with self-tanners in the past, this is a must-try!

Hydrate your Skin with Wei Beauty’s Lychee Thirst Relief Masque

Thursday, August 2, 2012

Lychee Thirst Relief MasqueI love how amazing my skin feels and looks in the summer months.  And in the winter, I’m constantly searching for someway to mimic the summer skin I adore.

Fortunately, I just found my go-to for re-creating the look I cherish so much now for the cold months ahead.  No surprise, it’s from one of my favorite skincare lines, Wei Beauty.  Their Lychee Thirst Relief Masque is flat-out amazing.  It’s key ingredient, Lychee, is used in traditional Chinese medicine providing the skin with much-needed moisture.  It’s also nutrient-packed containing 40% more Vitamin C than an orange.  And you know dolls, Vitamin C is a natural skin brightener!

But don’t get me wrong, I haven’t had to wait around until winter to make use of Lychee Thirst Relief Masque.  It’s hydrating properties make this more than handy when I’ve had a bit too much sun or wind this summer.  I’ve been able to slather on the masque to keep my skin properly moisturized.
